Indigenous Leaders Gather at Former Dakota Concentration Camp, Now ICE Headquarters
Scenes from February 7, 2026, at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building. Indigenous leaders gathered in a peaceful and powerful act of resistance, leading songs, prayers, and drumming. The Whipple Building stands on the grounds of Fort Snelling, where hundreds of Dakota people were forcibly imprisoned in a concentration camp and many lost their lives. Today, the building serves as a Minneapolis headquarters for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), adding to the meaning of this peaceful gathering and its location.
