Remembering Alex Pretti - Minneapolis Grieves Together

On January 24, 2026, Alex Pretti, a peaceful observer, was brutally murdered by ICE agents in broad daylight. His death, was documented by fellow observers from nearly every angle.

I finally made it to Alex Pretti’s memorial site last night. There were quite a few people gathered around, some crying, others solemnly reading the numerous cards and letters placed on the ground. There was just such a sense of community in this space, people offering food, coffee, and hand warmers. Minneapolis has always been, and will always continue to be, such a beautiful place, despite the absolute violence ICE has inflicted on our neighbors.

One letter touched me:
“Alex, you and our entire gang on the 11th floor took care of me so well back in 2007. I have never forgot it. I will never forget it.”

It’s beyond evident that Alex was truly a good guy. He worked as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. He was a helper, a healer. He wasn’t a “violent protestor,” as this administration wants you to believe. He was someone whose last words were, “Are you okay?”

Thank you, Alex. In honor of him and everyone who loved him.

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
George Orwell, 1984
